BMW iX5 hits 464 kW in its first public charging demo: 10–80% in 22 minutes
The new BMW iX5 60 xDrive, with Gen6 800 V technology, charged at up to 464 kW in a demo with IONNA and Alpitronic. BMW quotes 10–80% in 22 minutes for the 141 kWh net battery.

The BMW iX5, the first all-electric X5, has shown how fast it can charge. At an international media event in Southern California, with the IONNA network and charger maker Alpitronic, the iX5 60 xDrive reached a peak of 464 kW, according to "Electrek". That is slightly above the 460 kW BMW officially quotes.
BMW's official figures
According to the "BMW Group PressClub", the iX5 60 xDrive charges at up to 460 kW DC. In just 10 minutes it adds up to 217 miles (around 350 km) of WLTP range. The 141 kWh net battery goes from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes. "Electrek" gives the capacity as 144 kWh. 460 kW is the peak rate, not the average across the whole session.

Gen6 and 800 V: the technology leap
The iX5 uses the sixth generation of BMW eDrive, which debuted on the new iX3. The 800 V architecture brings faster charging, longer range and bidirectional charging. The new batteries use cylindrical cells with 20% higher volumetric energy density than the Gen5 prismatic cells.

Power and launch
With two motors and all-wheel drive, the iX5 60 xDrive makes 425 kW (578 hp). In the US it does 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds, according to "Electrek". It is BMW's first EV built in the US, at Spartanburg. The US launch is planned for the first quarter of 2027, from $79,800. European prices were not part of this release.
What it means for drivers
- Short stops on long trips: 10–80% in 22 minutes, on a very large battery.
- Ready for the future: the iX5 can use chargers far more powerful than most in service today.
- Same technology as the iX3: see also the iX3 test with 1,011 km on a single charge.
