Charging

How much does it cost to charge an electric car in Romania? Home, public AC and DC fast charging, per 100 km

A practical guide with tariffs checked in October 2026: at home you pay roughly 1.05–1.40 lei/kWh, at public AC chargers 1.70–2.55 lei/kWh, and at DC fast chargers 2.30–2.99 lei/kWh. What that means per 100 km, and how it compares with petrol.

"How much does it cost to charge?" is probably the question every EV driver hears most. The short answer: it depends hugely on where you charge. At home, 100 km can cost under 20 lei. On a fast charger, the same distance can cost more than twice as much.

We gathered the public tariffs in force at the start of October 2026 and ran the numbers for a typical electric car. (For reference, €1 is roughly 5 lei.)

The basic maths

For the examples we use a consumption of 18 kWh per 100 km, measured at the plug or charger, with charging losses included. That's realistic for a compact EV or small electric SUV in mixed driving. Winter and motorway driving push it up; summer city driving brings it down.

Cost per 100 km = 18 kWh × price per kWh.

1. At home: the cheapest option

Since the market was liberalised, household prices depend on the supplier, the offer and the distribution area. In ANRE's official comparator (POSF), the cheapest offers in October start at about 1.04–1.09 lei/kWh in most areas, while many offers from the big suppliers sit around 1.2–1.4 lei/kWh, final price including VAT. Some offers also carry a fixed daily fee.

  • 1.05 lei/kWh → about 19 lei / 100 km
  • 1.40 lei/kWh → about 25 lei / 100 km
  • Time-of-use tariffs can lower the cost: PPC has an offer at 0.98 lei/kWh in its "smart" hours, or about 18 lei / 100 km if you charge overnight.

Example: driving 1,000 km a month and charging only at home, you'd pay roughly 190–250 lei a month for energy.

What you charge with matters too. A regular socket (about 2.3 kW) is enough if you don't drive much each day, but a 7–11 kW wallbox is faster, safer for daily use and usually wastes less energy.

2. Public AC chargers (slow charging, up to 22 kW)

You'll find them at mall and supermarket car parks, hotels and around town. They make sense if you're staying for a few hours.

Operator AC tariff (lei/kWh, incl. VAT) Cost / 100 km
MOL Plugee (registered user) 1.70 ~31 lei
PPC blue (with app account) 1.99 ~36 lei
Renovatio / e-charge (via app) 1.99 ~36 lei
PPC blue without account / Renovatio by card at POS 2.19 ~39 lei
Eldrive 2.55 ~46 lei

3. DC fast charging

Here you pay for speed. On long trips you can't avoid it, but if you only ever charge on DC, the cost gets closer to that of an economical combustion car.

Operator DC tariff (lei/kWh, incl. VAT) Cost / 100 km
MOL Plugee rapid, up to 99 kW (registered) 2.30 ~41 lei
Renovatio / e-charge, up to 149 kW (app) 2.49 ~45 lei
PPC blue DC (with account) 2.50 ~45 lei
Eldrive (24–400 kW) 2.55 ~46 lei
Renovatio / e-charge, 150 kW and up (app) 2.79 ~50 lei
MOL Plugee ultra, 100 kW+ (registered) 2.85 ~51 lei
Renovatio 150 kW and up, by card at POS 2.99 ~54 lei

Tesla Superchargers price each site differently and by time of day. At the last documented update (May 2026), Tesla owners paid from 1.23–1.24 lei/kWh at night (for example at Promenada Bucharest, Timișoara, Pitești and Constanța) up to 2.40 lei/kWh during the day, or roughly 22–43 lei / 100 km. Non-Tesla cars pay more without a membership. Check the price in the Tesla app before you plug in.

How it compares with petrol and diesel

At average prices on October 5, 2026 (10.08 lei/l for 95 petrol and 10.95 lei/l for diesel, according to PretCarburant.ro):

How you drive 100 km Approximate cost
EV, charged at home 19–25 lei
EV, public AC 31–46 lei
EV, DC fast charging 41–54 lei
Petrol, 6.5 l/100 km ~66 lei
Diesel, 5.5 l/100 km ~60 lei

How to pay less

  • Charge at home as much as you can, ideally overnight on a time-of-use tariff.
  • Create accounts in the apps. At PPC blue and Renovatio, paying without an account or by card at the POS costs 0.20 lei/kWh more. At MOL, unregistered users pay 0.10–0.30 lei/kWh extra.
  • Subscriptions only pay off if you charge publicly a lot: PPC blue has 105, 200 and 300 lei monthly plans with 60, 120 and 200 kWh included. Eldrive's SMART plan costs 29 lei a month.
  • On DC, charge only what you need. Above 80%, charging slows sharply and you pay the same per kWh for extra minutes at the charger.
  • Mind the pre-authorisation: PPC blue temporarily holds 100 lei on your card for each session, MOL between 150 and 200 lei. The money is released after charging.

Tariffs change often, and some networks price individual sites differently. You'll always see the final price in the operator's app before you start a session.
