Tesla plans a second Giga Berlin hall, more than twice the size of the current one, aiming for up to 1 million cars a year

Tesla is preparing a second production hall of about 536,000 m² at Grünheide. The permit filing comes in December, and construction could start in 2027.

Tesla's only European car factory could get a lot bigger. The "TeslaNewswire" account reported on X that Tesla plans to expand Giga Berlin with a new production hall of about 536,000 m², so the plant can eventually build up to 1 million vehicles a year. The details come from German public broadcaster rbb and were picked up by local papers MOZ and Lausitzer Rundschau.

What Tesla is planning in Grünheide

The new hall would sit north of the existing plant and be more than twice the size of today's main hall, which covers about 219,000 m². The package also includes a dedicated substation and expanded wastewater treatment.

The timeline: not a 2027 story

According to rbb, Tesla will file the partial permit application in December, and construction could start in 2027 at the earliest, pending approval. The full expansion is planned over roughly ten years.

The 1 million target isn't new. Tesla applied back in 2023 to double capacity from 500,000 to 1 million cars a year, and in October 2024 it won approval for the first stage, as Reuters reported. Tesla says the new filing builds on that decision.

How much the plant builds today

The post says the plant currently produces "over 375,000" vehicles a year. More precisely, 375,000 is the annual rate Tesla is now aiming for, up to 7,500 cars a week, while the current permit allows 500,000. Giga Berlin builds the Model Y for Europe, so a bigger plant means faster deliveries across the continent.
