Is a Drive Around the Block No Longer Enough? Turo's New Pitch to US Renters

How do you find out what it's like to drive a Tesla with FSD (Supervised) without buying one? In the US, the answer now comes from a rental platform. Turo, a marketplace where owners rent out their own cars, started sending emails on October 30 inviting customers to try FSD (Supervised) over a whole weekend, not just a few minutes.

What the Turo email says

The email was shared on X by Sawyer Merritt, who follows Tesla closely. In short, Turo argues that a quick dealership test drive tells you very little about a car. The message is headed "Road trip, meet Tesla", carries the Tesla logo and invites readers to feed their curiosity for Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

Turo encourages customers to take a Tesla with FSD (Supervised) on a weekend getaway to see how the system handles a real journey, and ends with a button linking to the FSD (Supervised) cars available on the platform.

How the program works

According to Turo's official October 26 press release, this is the first verified Tesla FSD (Supervised) rental experience in the US. Since October 28, guests can search for and book Teslas with FSD (Supervised) activated.

The difference from an ordinary listing is verification. Hosts link their Tesla account to Turo, and the platform confirms FSD status through a direct Tesla API integration. When the subscription is active, the label appears automatically on the listing and in search.

Some rules from Turo's official pages:

  • There is no separate charge for FSD (Supervised): if the car has it, it is part of the booking.
  • Hosts can no longer charge extra for FSD as a paid "Extra".
  • The driver stays responsible for the car, with or without FSD engaged, and must remain attentive at all times.
  • You only need a valid driver's license and an approved Turo account. In the US, the minimum age is 18.

A bonus for hosts

Eligible US hosts can get one free month of FSD (Supervised) starting November 16. Per Turo, the car needs AI4 hardware, must be owned (not leased), the Tesla account must be linked, and the host must have completed at least one Turo trip. Hosts who already had a paid subscription on October 26 are not eligible.

What it means for drivers

For Tesla, it is a new kind of test drive: instead of 15 minutes with a sales advisor in the passenger seat, you get the car for two or three days on your own roads. For anyone weighing the FSD subscription, it is a cheap way to see if it is worth it.

The program is US-only for now. In Europe, FSD (Supervised) is advancing country by country, as it did recently in Slovakia, but no similar rental offer has been announced here.
