Volkswagen's electric minibus is getting a new generation. In an interview with "Auto Express" at the Paris Motor Show, reported by "Electrek", VW brand CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed of the next ID. Buzz: "they're working on it."

The problem: price

Schäfer admitted the current ID. Buzz "is in the wrong cost base." In the US it started at around $60,000 and offered at most 234 miles of range. The new model will be more affordable.

What changes

  • it moves to the Group's new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform), meant to cut costs and enable software-defined vehicles;
  • more range and faster charging;
  • Schäfer hinted at cheaper LFP batteries;
  • the new interior and infotainment from the ID. Polo and ID. Tiguan, including the return of physical buttons.

The design

Design boss Andreas Mindt says it will need "lots of secret sauce." He admits "people get tired" of retro cars, as happened with the New Beetle, but promises: "it will be interesting." Expect the classic silhouette with a modern twist.

When

VW gave no date. The first SSP model was originally due in 2026, but the Group now says "by the end of the decade," with the new ID. Buzz likely following shortly after. Meanwhile, the ID. Buzz sold just 432 units in the US in Q3, down 82.5% year on year.
