Why I can't wait for FSD (Supervised) in Romania: a system that raises the bar for every carmaker
In a vlog filmed behind the wheel of a Tesla Model 3, I explain why I believe FSD (Supervised) will make roads safer, how driver monitoring works and what Romania's traffic code would need to change.

I filmed this video on September 27, driving my Tesla Model 3, with one thought in mind: I can't wait for FSD (Supervised) to arrive in Romania. It is the system that takes you from point A to point B while you watch the road, without keeping your hands on the wheel. This is not a technical test but an honest conversation about why I think this technology matters for every driver, not just Tesla owners.
What "Supervised" really means
The key word is "supervised". You give the car an address, and it steers, takes the bends and yields on its own. But you are still the driver: eyes forward, hands ready to take over. The Dutch authority "RDW", which approved the system on April 10, 2026, describes exactly that: hands do not need to stay on the wheel, but the cabin camera checks whether you are looking at the road. Repeated inattention brings warnings and, eventually, a temporary lockout. In other words, you cannot abuse it.
Why I think it will improve safety
I admit it in the video: while I am filming a vlog, I am not 100% focused on driving. I talk, I glance at the camera, I do two things at once, like many of us. A system like FSD does not answer the phone or get distracted by conversation. It only deals with traffic rules and the road. That is why I believe that, used correctly, it will make roads safer. "RDW" reached a similar conclusion: correct use of the system contributes positively to road safety, after reviewing data from 1.8 million kilometers driven in Europe.
In the video I say FSD is roughly four times safer than an average driver and that more than a million kilometers a day are driven with it in Europe. Those are my figures, based on what I have followed. "Tesla" publishes its own safety report, and some critics have questioned the methodology, so I treat them as a signal rather than a certainty.
Tesla raises the bar, and others will follow
Just as Tesla proved more than a decade ago that an EV could cover hundreds of kilometers on a charge, I believe FSD will push the industry to move faster again. The signs are already there: at the GTC conference in Berlin, "electrive" reports that Mercedes and Volvo use Nvidia's platform for automated driving, while Volkswagen showed the ID. Buzz AD. More competition is good news for all of us.
Where it is approved and where Romania stands
Things have moved on since filming. On October 17, Slovakia became the ninth EU country to accept the Dutch approval, after the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia and Croatia. The October 6 discussion in Brussels ended without a vote, and an EU-wide decision is expected in December at the earliest.
In Romania, the traffic code is part of the problem. Article 99 of Emergency Ordinance 195/2002 fines drivers for "letting go of the steering wheel while driving". I think the law will have to be adapted, and my estimate in the video is that it could take another year or two. I sincerely hope I am wrong.
What it means for drivers
- FSD (Supervised) is not yet legal in Romania. The Tesla app here currently shows the "Basic" version.
- The driver stays responsible. Even where it is approved, you must stay attentive at all times, and the system checks.
- Watch December. A positive EU vote would open the way in every member state, but Romania would also need a change in the law.
- Competition is growing. Other carmakers are preparing similar systems, so the benefits will not stop at Tesla.
On Romania's beautiful roads, I would love to enjoy the scenery while the car does the hard work. What about you, would you trust it?
