2027 BMW iX4 and electric X4 M: what’s confirmed vs what’s still a rumor

We fact-checked a Google AI Overview on the BMW iX4 50, iX4 M60, and a full electric X4 M. Official BMW numbers for the dual-motor models are solid; the quad-motor X4 M without an “i” badge is still report-only.

A Google AI Overview has been circulating with very specific claims about the 2027 BMW iX4, the iX4 M60 xDrive, and a future full-fat electric X4 M that would drop the “i” prefix. We checked each claim against BMW Group press releases and specialist reports. Short version: the dual-motor iX4 50 and M60 figures are real; the quad-motor X4 M without an “i,” coded ZA7 and due in late 2027, is still report-level, not an official BMW announcement.

We already covered the official iX4 reveal. This piece focuses on the timeline, U.S. vs Europe specs, and where rumor begins.

What BMW has officially confirmed for the iX4

BMW unveiled the iX4 on October 7–8, 2026 as the third series-production Neue Klasse model after the iX3 and i3. It will be built in Debrecen, Hungary, on the same line as the iX3. Every variant uses one motor per axle (dual-motor xDrive), an 800-volt architecture, Gen6 cylindrical-cell batteries, and DC charging at up to 400 kW on the larger packs.

Variant Power (EU / U.S.) Orders / launch Official notes
iX4 40 xDrive 275 kW / 374 hp March 2027 (Europe) Not in the U.S. launch lineup
iX4 50 xDrive 345 kW / 469 hp (EU); 463 hp (U.S.) Global launch March 2027 108.7 kWh usable; up to 828 km WLTP / ~428 miles preliminary EPA estimate
iX4 M60 xDrive 450 kW / 612 hp (EU); 603 hp (U.S.) Orders from January 2027; production from March 2027 Dual-motor M Performance model, not a full M; 0–62 mph in 3.9 s

BMW USA’s FAQ lists the iX4 50 xDrive from $66,300 plus destination and handling. Some outlets rounded that to $66,200; the official BMW figure is $66,300. In Germany the 40 starts at €70,900 and the 50 at €75,900. M60 pricing and Romania pricing are still outstanding.

So the AI Overview claims about 463 hp, a March 2027 launch, a ~$66,200 starting price, M60 at 603–612 hp, and orders from January 2027 hold up, with the small U.S./EU horsepower split and the $66,300 sticker from BMW USA.

What is still a rumor: full X4 M, no “i,” code ZA7

Here the AI Overview mixes confirmed facts with February 2026 reporting. BMWBlog, citing a well-known Bimmerpost insider, said that:

  • the full electric replacement for the gas X4 M carries internal code ZA7;
  • production would start in November 2027 in Debrecen, alongside the X3 M (ZA5);
  • the badge would simply read “BMW X4 M”, dropping the “i” (just as the electric M3 would not be called “iM3”);
  • it would use a quad-motor xDrive setup shared with the electric M3;
  • output would land somewhere between 800 and 1,000 hp;
  • cars would arrive as a 2028 model year, with production late in 2027.

BMW has not published those details for an electric X4 M. There is no PressClub release naming ZA7, a November 2027 start, or an “X4 M” badge without “i.” Until Munich confirms them, treat them as reports, not facts.

What BMW M has confirmed for Neue Klasse

Separately from the X4 M rumor, BMW M said in January 2026 that from 2027 the first full M models on Neue Klasse technology will use BMW M eDrive with four motors—one per wheel—plus BMW M Dynamic Performance Control. In October 2026 BMW confirmed that the first high-performance car on that tech is the fully electric M3, to be built at Plant Munich.

That makes a four-motor X3 M / X4 M family plausible on shared hardware, but it does not replace an official X4 M announcement. The distinction matters: M60 is already on the books as a dual-motor M Performance model; full M is another chapter still unverified for the SUV coupe.

What it means for drivers

If you want a BMW electric SUV coupe in 2027, the iX4 50 and iX4 M60 are the ones you can plan around: Debrecen production, 800 V, up to 400 kW DC charging, strong WLTP range on the 50, and serious pace on the M60. In the U.S., the 50 arrives first from about $66,300 before destination. Europe also gets the more accessible 40.

If you are waiting for a true X4 M with four motors and 800-plus horsepower, the late-2027 production / 2028 model-year window in the reports fits the electric M3 timeline—but it is not yet a BMW commitment. Do not put a deposit down on the strength of an AI Overview; wait for PressClub language and open order books.

For drivers in Romania, Debrecen remains a practical plus: short logistics for Neue Klasse SUVs already showed up with the iX3, and the same should apply once iX4 orders open.
