Why Tesla Stock Stumbled After the US Midterms, and What It Could Change for Owners

Tesla and SpaceX shares dropped sharply after the US midterm elections. What worries investors, what we know about Terafab and a possible merger, and what it means in practice for people who drive a Tesla.

This week's biggest move around Tesla did not come from a car announcement. It came from US politics. After the midterm elections on November 3, Tesla shares fell about 11% on Thursday and SpaceX shares about 9%. According to "CNBC," the two companies led by Elon Musk lost more than $420 billion in combined market value in two days, and by the close on Thursday the figure had grown to roughly $456 billion.

What happened

Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate. In Texas, where Tesla and SpaceX are both headquartered, Democrats also won the Senate seat and the governor's office, defeating two longtime Musk allies. "CNBC" reports that Musk was the biggest donor to Republican candidates this cycle, with contributions above $470 million according to the "Financial Times," and that most of the candidates he backed lost.

The drop came during a broader tech sell-off, so the election cannot explain all of it. Still, analysts quoted by "Reuters" and "CNBC" tie the move to three concerns.

The three worries

1. More scrutiny. Investors fear that a Democratic Congress could open investigations and push stricter rules for Musk's companies. That is an expectation, not a decision: none of the sources we checked reports a new probe into Tesla.

2. Texas data centers. Tesla and SpaceX are building AI infrastructure in Texas, and the incoming governor made data centers a campaign issue, calling for a moratorium on new approvals until tougher rules on water use and electricity costs are passed. Goldman Sachs analysts, quoted by "Reuters," estimate that Democratic wins at state and local level could lead to short-term moratoria affecting about 45% of planned US data center capacity.

3. Terafab and the merger. In October Musk announced Terafab, a joint Tesla–SpaceX chip manufacturing complex in Texas costing up to $119 billion. He has also said a merger of the two companies would be a "good idea," and special committees at both firms are exploring a possible deal. Analyst Dan Ives, quoted by "Reuters," says a merger is still plausible but now faces a tougher regulatory road in 2027. Any merger would also need shareholder approval.

What has not changed

Cars did not become more expensive or harder to get because of this news. No recall, price change or delivery change tied to the elections has been announced. The figures above describe share prices, not vehicle sales, and the market may recover or the move may deepen.

What it means for drivers

For owners in Europe the direct impact is small. Tesla prices in Europe depend on exchange rates, output at Giga Berlin and demand, not on the stock quote. A falling share price does not change your warranty, your service options or your software updates.

The thing to watch is the technology roadmap. Capital markets help fund AI training and driver-assistance development. If US regulation tightens, some Texas projects could slow down, but Europe is decided separately. There, Tesla Assisted Driving is going through European approval: Dutch regulator RDW confirmed on November 3 that the speed margin is capped at +10% and the system gets its new name, while the EU-wide vote has been pushed to December at the earliest, "Electrek" notes.

There is nothing to do with your car right now. And if you also hold the stock, one trading day says little about the quality of the product. For drivers, the news that matters most is still software, safety and charging.

Market-value figures come from "CNBC" and "Reuters" and are valid for Thursday's session, November 5; they can change at any time. The image is Tesla's own photo of its AI training data center at Giga Texas, published by the company.
