BYD has launched the second generation of the Seagull in China, the small EV Europeans know as the Dolphin Surf. According to "CnEVPost", the new model has grown a lot: it is longer, has 5 seats, the motor has moved to the rear and range reaches 420 km on China's CLTC cycle. The photos in this article show the current Dolphin Surf sold in Europe.

Bigger and more practical

The new Seagull is 4,205 mm long, 425 mm more than before, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase. That lets it offer five seats. A 94-litre front trunk is added, and maximum cargo space rises to 1,380 litres.

Rear-wheel drive, more power and 5-minute charging

The motor moves to the rear axle, and the rear suspension becomes multi-link. Power rises to 85 kW or 95 kW, up from 55 kW. There are two batteries: 39.2 kWh, with flash charging from 10% to 70% in about 5 minutes, and 30.1 kWh, with 320 km CLTC. Three of the five versions reach 420 km CLTC.

The new Seagull gets ventilated and heated seats. In China, the five versions cost between 65,900 and 99,900 yuan. BYD has not yet said whether or when the second generation will come to Europe.

What it means for drivers

  • The Dolphin Surf is already on sale in Romania, from 19,400 euros, according to the "BYD Romania" configurator.
  • The direction is clear: the new generation brings more space, more power and very fast charging, a sign of how quickly small EVs are improving.
  • CLTC range is more optimistic than the WLTP figures used in Europe; European numbers will be lower.
