Waymo is laying the groundwork for its first expansion into Spain, starting with the Region of Madrid. According to the official "Waymo" blog, the first riders should be using the robotaxi service in 2027, and the first cars arrive in the city in the coming days.

How it starts in Madrid

The first vehicles are electric Jaguar I-PACE cars fitted with the Waymo driving system. At first they will be driven manually to map and learn the streets. Validation follows, with trained local specialists behind the wheel. Anyone interested can already sign up for updates at waymo.com/waymo-in-spain.

The experience so far

Waymo brings a lot of mileage: more than 20 million trips and hundreds of thousands of commercial rides every week. The fleet has covered more than 400 million kilometres fully autonomously.

Safety as the main argument

According to "Waymo", its cars have 95% fewer crashes causing serious injury or worse than human drivers over the same distances, or 20 times fewer. Spanish road safety organisations FESVIAL and AESLEME joined the announcement in support of the project.
