Denza N8 electric SUV hits Chinese showrooms: BYD's luxury brand takes aim at German rivals
The first new Denza N8 SUVs have reached Chinese stores four days before the official November 12 launch. What BYD's premium brand puts into its large five-seat electric SUV, from the second-generation Blade Battery to flash charging, and what it means for Europe.

Denza, the premium brand of the BYD group, said on Sunday, November 8, that the first examples of the new N8 have arrived at showrooms across China. The official launch, with prices, is set for November 12 at BYD's Pingshan headquarters in Shenzhen. Until then, buyers can see the car in person in cities such as Guangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhengzhou, Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, according to "IT Home" and "D1EV".
The N8 name is not new. The first version, from 2023, was a plug-in hybrid SUV that did not stay on sale for long. The new N8 is a different vehicle: a large five-seat SUV conceived first as a battery-electric model. Denza also mentions a plug-in hybrid version, but treats it as the secondary option.
Six-seat footprint, five seats inside
The Denza press release published by "Xinhuanet" lists the dimensions: 5,150 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, 1,820 mm tall, on a 3,075 mm wheelbase. The brand's pitch is straightforward. It takes the body of a three-row SUV and splits the space over just two rows. Up front there are two "zero-gravity" seats, while the rear bench reclines to 146 degrees and adds a leg rest, ventilation, heating and massage.
Cargo numbers are big even for this class: a 205-litre front trunk and 1,046 litres at the rear, growing to 2,150 litres with the second row folded. Denza also talks about 33 storage spaces and magnetic mounting points in the cabin for accessories.
The interior is built around two displays: a 1.1-metre "sky screen" at the base of the windscreen for driving information, and a 30-inch central screen. The list continues with a Devialet sound system, a 6.8-litre fridge, a 17.3-inch roof-mounted screen for rear passengers, and BYD's God's Eye 5.0 driver-assistance suite.
Second-generation Blade Battery and more than 1,000 km CLTC
Every version gets BYD's second-generation Blade Battery and its flash charging technology. The longest-range electric variant is rated at 1,003 km on the CLTC cycle. According to "CarNewsChina" and "Electrek", which cite Chinese regulatory filings, the large pack is 130.15 kWh, while the smaller one is about 105.8 kWh for roughly 800 km CLTC. "CarNewsChina" also lists intermediate ranges of 970 and 840 km.
Denza's charging promise is "5 minutes for a usable charge, 9 minutes for a near-full charge", with only three extra minutes at -30°C. Those figures apply to BYD's dedicated high-power flash chargers, not to an ordinary fast charger.
From 320 to 890 kW
The electric line-up uses two layouts, confirmed by "CnEVPost", "CarNewsChina" and "IT Home":
- rear-wheel drive, single motor: 320 kW or 370 kW;
- all-wheel drive, three motors (Yi Sifang / e³ platform): a 270 kW front motor plus two 310 kW rear motors, for 890 kW combined.
The tri-motor version can perform a "compass turn", spinning almost on the spot, and has a controlled crawl mode for rough ground. The official release quotes 0–100 km/h "in the 2.9-second class", rear-wheel steering with a 4.5-metre turning radius, and standard Yunniao-A (DiSus-A) dual-chamber air suspension.
What comes next
Denza opened pre-orders on October 26, with a 2,000 yuan deposit that converts into a 5,000 yuan credit for options or a camping kit. Prices arrive on November 12. "Electrek" reports that brand general manager Li Hui called the pre-order response "excellent", but Denza has not published a figure.
There is no European announcement yet. Denza already sells in several Western European markets, mainly with the D9 MPV, and BYD is openly talking about building out its flash-charging network on the continent, as we covered when Stella Li visited Bucharest.
What it means for drivers
If you are shopping for a large electric SUV, the N8 shows how fast Chinese brands are raising the bar. A pack above 130 kWh, 890 kW and a lounge-style cabin for five put direct pressure on the BMW iX, Mercedes EQE SUV and Audi Q8 e-tron. Even if the N8 does not come to Europe soon, that competition will show up in the pricing and equipment of the models sold here.
Read range figures carefully. 1,003 km CLTC does not mean 1,003 km on a winter motorway. "CarNewsChina" estimates around 812 km WLTP for the top version, and real-world range at 130 km/h in the cold will be lower still. For an SUV this large, winter and high speed matter enormously, as every one of our cold-weather tests has shown.
Flash charging only matters if the chargers exist. "Nine minutes to nearly full" assumes BYD's own high-power flash stations, which are only starting to appear in Europe. On a regular 150–350 kW DC charger, sessions will take much longer.
If you need seven seats, the N8 is not your car. Denza deliberately chose five seats for comfort. Larger families have other options in the same range, such as the N9 or the D9.
